The Wisconsin DNR has released its summary for chronic wasting disease sampling efforts.
For the 2025 deer hunting season, the DNR focused on sample collection in designated 2025 fall priority areas to better understand disease levels and distribution in areas where the disease was most recently discovered.
Across the state, 242 CWD sampling locations were available to hunters, which sampled 17,759 deer.
2,006 deer tested positive, with one coming from Manitowoc County in the Hunting Season Surveillance in 2024.
However, of the 191 samples analyzed in the county in 2025, none tested positive.
Other counties in the DNR’s eastern Farmland Zone had different results, with Fond du Lac County detecting its fifth and sixth positive cases.
Sheboygan and Oconto counties each detected their fourth and third positive cases, respectively. DNR Deer Herd Health Specialist Erin Larson says chronic wasting disease remains a complex issue with no single solution.
She continues saying the DNR, “remains committed to continuing CWD efforts, including providing services to hunters and creating partnerships with the people of Wisconsin to work towards the common goal of a healthy deer herd and outstanding hunting opportunities in our state.” Article courtesy of SeehaferNews.com
